The ground

Grazing ground in Ards and North Down, and what it needs.

The driest corner of Northern Ireland. Lighter soils on the Ards peninsula and the drumlins of North Down dry out early and grow grass for a long season; these are usually the first paddocks in the province that will take a harrow or roller in spring.

Wait for the ground to carry machinery before harrowing and rolling in spring — it is usually later than the calendar suggests. Topping runs well into autumn on a long growing season, and rush control is a repeat job rather than a single pass.

Not sure which of those your field needs? Describe what it looks like and the contractor will tell you — that’s their job, not yours.

Need paddock work done? How to find a contractor anywhere in the UK

Topping, overseeding, subsoiling, full renovation — the machinery matters more than the tractor. What to ask for, what to tell a contractor, and how to find one who actually has the right kit.
