A general grounds-maintenance contractor might be able to mow a field, but what happens when you need to relieve serious soil compaction, collect cut vegetation, overseed several acres or completely renovate a damaged paddock?

Specialist paddock machinery without having to own it
One of the biggest advantages of using an agricultural contractor is access to machinery that would be difficult to justify owning for an individual yard.
Take flail collecting as an example.
Regularly cutting paddocks can help control coarse grass and weeds, but sometimes leaving all of the cut material behind isn't desirable. A flail collector can cut vegetation and collect the resulting material in a single operation. For an equestrian yard, purchasing a suitable tractor and professional flail collector could represent a substantial investment.
A contractor already equipped with the machinery can potentially arrive, complete the work and leave without the yard having to purchase, maintain and store another machine.
The same applies to equipment such as subsoilers, agricultural aerators, seeders, fertiliser spreaders, lime spreaders, rotavators, stone buriers, large flail mowers and specialist pasture-renovation machinery.
Compacted horse paddocks
Compaction is one of the most common problems we encounter in heavily used horse paddocks.
Repeated horse and machinery traffic can create dense layers within the soil that restrict the movement of water, air and roots.
The symptoms above ground can include poor grass growth, standing water, muddy areas and paddocks that struggle to recover despite repeated reseeding.
Simply spreading more grass seed isn't necessarily going to solve the underlying problem.
Where significant compaction is suspected, the ground can be assessed and, where appropriate, mechanically relieved using suitable agricultural equipment.
That might involve operations such as:
compaction testing → subsoiling → cultivation → levelling → seeding → rolling
Not every paddock needs the same treatment, which is why understanding the condition of the ground before starting major renovation work is important.

Paddock overseeding contractors
Sometimes a complete renovation isn't necessary.
If an existing grass sward is fundamentally sound but has become thin or damaged, overseeding can be a much less disruptive way of improving the paddock.
Specialist agricultural seeders can introduce grass seed into the existing sward with considerably less disturbance than completely cultivating the field.
This can be particularly useful on busy equestrian properties where taking large areas of grazing out of service for extended periods isn't practical.

Full paddock renovation
Some fields have deteriorated beyond what routine maintenance can realistically correct.
This can happen because of severe compaction, poaching, poor drainage, extensive weed infestation or years of heavy use.
In these situations, complete renovation may be the better long-term option.
Depending on the condition of the field, a renovation programme might include cultivation, compaction relief, levelling, stone burial, lime or fertiliser application, reseeding and rolling.
The exact process should depend on the condition of the soil and field rather than simply applying the same treatment everywhere.
For larger equestrian properties, renovation can also be phased so that only part of the available grazing is taken out of service at one time.
Paddock contractors for larger equestrian yards
The service isn't limited to small private paddocks.

Finding the right contractor for the job

A contractor equipped primarily for hedge cutting may not have a suitable grass seeder. Someone specialising in arable cultivation may have large equipment that's unsuitable for smaller equestrian paddocks with narrow gateways.
Likewise, a small paddock-maintenance business may be perfect for a two-acre private yard but not equipped to renovate 50 acres efficiently.
